At thirteen, he gave me my first kiss.

By sixteen, we’d fallen in love, planned a future together, and had our eyes set on the horizon.

Love never fails, right?

But for Ramsey, it did.

Love failed him.

I failed him.

The entire world failed him.

At seventeen, Ramsey was convicted of killing the boy who assaulted me.

Move on,he wrote in his first and only letter from prison.

Start a new life, he urged.

I don’t love you anymore, he lied.

So here I am, twelve long years later, waiting for a man I don’t even know to emerge from between the chain link gates.

REVIEW

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 STARS

WOW…I shouldn’t be surprised that I’ve fallen in love with another of Bethany-Kris’ worlds!

I loved her rendition of the classic fairy tale, The Little Mermaid. It’s definitely not a hearts and flowers kind of story, but still an utterly addicting read. Arelle and Eryx are an odd couple considering one is hunting the other, yet the chemistry they share is intense.

I am eagerly awaiting more from the 9INE REALMS. The Hunted by Bethany-Kris is an EPIC read that will absolutely join the ranks of the BIBLIO-ARISTOCRACY!!!

“You never tried to run.”

So many did.

And were killed for it, too.

“No,” his mother said quietly.

“Why?”

Anthia’s walk came to a stop, and so did Eryx’s beside her. Her violet eyes—the one thing he hadn’t taken from his mother because he wasn’t full-blooded like she was—met his blue stare, and he mirrored her soft smile. “Now, that, you really should know the answer to.”

“I think I do.”

“But maybe you want me to say it?”

“Maybe,” he agreed.

“For you. I never ran because of you.”

So yes, he had known. He was just selfish enough to admit he liked that answer, too. Even if he shouldn’t.

“Do you know why else I sang to you?” his mother asked. “When you were little, I mean.”

“I don’t even remember it.”

“Not here,” his mother said, pointing at her right ear and winking. Then, she pointed at her heart before also gesturing at her mind. “But in these places, you can’t forget them. The water songs—the siren’s calls, Eryx. It’s the thrall of the mermaids. Families hear them singing for miles. Mates, even farther. Through waters and storms and wars … we hear them inside. You hear them, too. Why did you think you came to find me here?”

“I thought the songs were a way of warning …”

Anthia grinned. “Or a way to call someone home.”

The wind blew again, and this time, his mother sang with it, the melody twisting and curling with the breeze and through the trees. He stood right beside her, heard the song as clear as day, but it almost seemed to echo within him, too.

Except when she stopped …

Well, the song didn’t.

But it wasn’t his mother singing anymore.

Anthia’s head tipped up, and the paleness of her face became far more prominent when her eyes widened like the two moons beginning to peek through the heavy, dark clouds overhead. The song continued on, coming closer and … higher?

Eryx looked upward into the fruit trees. “Who is sing—”

His mother made an inhuman noise. “Run.”

His stare snapped back to his mother. “What?”

“You’re more like them than us, and that’s all the mermaids will see. Run, Eryx.”

She didn’t give him the chance to argue about it. The singing in what seemed like the trees above them came louder with every passing second. Her hand locked around his wrist, and she darted back up the channel of high water fruit trees. She ran like the wind, but he was still faster. It didn’t matter because he stayed behind her as they weaved through the narrow trail beside the trees, avoiding low hanging branches that swung in the suddenly heavy winds.

The storm had arrived. He should have listened to the rustling of the leaves. The creak of branches.

He might have heard the mermaid when she dropped down on top of them. Except he didn’t. Not until it was too late.

Red hair and violet eyes. Fingernails sharpened like claws that dug into his throat and teeth bared with a vicious hiss slipping past snarling lips. She was naked, shifted from her water form to walk on land although she attacked from the trees.

Eryx’s mother’s screams pierced through the howling winds, but from which direction he couldn’t be sure. All he could see was violet eyes and fire-red hair intent on ripping the throat right out of his fucking neck.

Charmed Souls FOR WEB

They say blood is thicker than water, but I was never proud of mine. A female born into the Kamlock bloodline was destined to possess three things they couldn’t change—a crazy as hell mother, an unfair amount of beauty, and a Charmed soul that was as black as night.

All a Kamlock woman ever desired in life was to use her beauty to destroy wealthy men and take their riches. A century had passed since a generation of Kamlock sisters had been anything other than gold diggers.

All I ever wanted was to be free of them. I knew I couldn’t change my cursed birth, but I could change its legacy. I had a job, I had friends, and I was slowly gaining my independence.

Until Rathe Scott crashed into my life and tore it apart.

He made me feel what I had spent my entire life never wanting to feel. He brought out a darkness I’d not known was inside me. And just when I thought I was becoming everything I had sworn I would never become…

He was gone.

“You’re more than you realize. I’ve tried to tell you that already. I, uh, I don’t think you are who you think you are,” he stopped abruptly then just gave a shake of his head. “You don’t want to hear what I think. Just do me a favor and don’t underestimate your power. You may not agree, but my mother,” he said then pointed at me “and your mother… they are scared of you. There is something we don’t know. But I read people well, and those two are careful not to push you too hard. When you were younger they weren’t as careful around you but the closer you get to twenty-one, things are changing. There is a power shift and you’re so used to the way things have been all your life, you don’t see it.”

This wasn’t the first time Duely had said something like this to me, but it was the first time he had mentioned things shifting the older I got. I still thought he was being dramatic and reading things into situations that weren’t there. I was done arguing that my mother, who had made my life hell from the moment my father died, was scared of me. She hated me. That was clear. She hated that I wouldn’t give her the power of three. She hated that I was stubborn and like my father. She possibly hated that I was half normal. But Persephone Kamlock was by no means scared of me. I let out a hard laugh. “It’s past time you let that theory go,” I told him.

He lowered his eyebrows in a frown. The frustrated kind, not the angry kind. He wanted me to buy into this idea of me being powerful. I had a mortal as a father. That was impossible to consider.

“Explain then why you feel a dark cast and I feel nothing? How do you know it’s dark? What is it you feel?” He was challenging me now. I didn’t have answers, of course. I was still trying to wrap my head around the disappearing act the caster had done.

“You would have felt it too if you’d seen the man,” I said in way of explanation.

“But I didn’t see him. No one did… but you,” he shot back.

I opened my mouth to remind him that I’d been walking around by myself to get peace. There was no way the man knew he’d see me out there alone. He hadn’t been waiting on me. That was ridiculous. This was getting us nowhere. Duely was done with the evening and wanted to get stoned. He wasn’t going to do much to help me. I just shook my head and turned to walk back to the house. “Maybe I’m crazy!” I called out to him, as I walked, trying to break the tension that had unintentionally built.

“Or maybe you’re darker than you want to accept,” was his response.

EXCLUSIVE REVEAL EXCERPT

He found she was still standing at the far end of the room and Gods … what a sight she was. Wrapped in silk, with fire-red curls that sprung out in every direction, and something haunted in her beautiful face.

A treat, really.

It took every ounce of willpower he had to stay right where he was and not cross the room to go to her. Despite how the last while had been meant to force her into coming to him, it hadn’t been particularly easy or kind for him, either. Not that he’d expected it to be, but he certainly hadn’t thought it would be this hard. For one, because he suspected none of this would end the way he wanted it to. And for two, because he was determined to get his answers tonight.

He couldn’t do that if he were fucking her.

However, it simply confirmed things he believed.

Something was different with them.

She would tell him what it was.

“What would happen,” he started, tilting his head toward the doors that led to the stairs currently kissing the sea with every wave that rushed up to touch the marble. “If I opened those doors?”

Arelle’s gaze darted from his to the rain-drenched glass. “The rain and wind would get in, wouldn’t it?”

“And make a mess.” He chuckled. “But that isn’t what I mean. What would you do?”

“I …” Her pretty bow-shaped lips turned down at the edges. “I don’t understand.”

“If I opened these doors, stepped back, and said go … what would happen?”

Her sharp inhale rattled through the room.

The following silence echoed.

At her sides, the shaking hands she balled into small fists hid the truth of her nerves. Not that it mattered because he had already seen them. He wondered if she might lie again … would she make him chase circles that answered nothing and leave him with more questions?

She surprised him.

Shocking.

She was always doing that.

More so than she should.

“I would go home because it’s the only place I know.”

“And?” he pressed.

Her audible swallow had him taking three steps closer to her. He still had quite a way to go to reach her spot, but this gave him room to still breathe.

“And what?”

The sting in her tone had him grinning. A defense of hers, he’d noticed, just happened to be that she got a little nasty. It meant he was hitting a raw nerve and she wanted him to stop. Except he couldn’t—not on this.

“And what would happen after you went home?” he asked.

Arelle’s jaw worked with the words she tried to hold back, but she still spit them out at him, anyway. Like they were dirt she wanted out of her mouth. A truth she wished she could hide. He saw and heard it all.

“I would be forced into a mating with a man who isn’t mine, and who I cannot be mated to. And when the bond didn’t take like they all know it should—”

“They’ll know the truth,” he interrupted, his tone saying calm.

Although how, he didn’t know.

Her chin quivered. “They’ll know it’s already been done. I’ve already mated.”

“When?”

“Eryx—”

When?”

Excerpt:

I open the door, expecting to see a couple of rough-hewn bastards fighting or training. They might even take a swing at me. We’re all a bunch of army bastards, more comfortable using our fists than our words.

Instead I’m struck by the sight of a body in motion, but not in violence.

She’s dancing. Grace. Strength. And completely inappropriate to this place—desire. It’s nothing so base as tits and ass, though I’m sure hers are lovely. No, it’s the sweep of her calf and the indent at her waist. The lift of her chin.

I could not be more shocked if I had been punched. Or shot.

It feels a little bit like being dunked in lava, watching her dance. I’m immobile in the doorframe of the warehouse. My sanity is one step behind me, utterly gone. I’m seeing visions. She can’t be real. I don’t even want her to be real. This kind of beauty doesn’t belong in the goddamn gutter. A pale pink leotard against the dinge-dark hollow. Satin ballet shoes pushing into the dirt. Slowly, very slowly, my sluggish mind searches the perimeter. Alone. We’re alone. If anyone had wanted to shoot me, they’d have had plenty of time. An eternity while I’d been staring.

Her spin slows, like a top that’s run out of momentum. Dark eyes meet mine. Surprise. A flash of something else—anger. She drops to flat feet. No longer a goddess, a blur. She becomes a woman. “No,” she says. Then again, “No,” with such force I glance behind me in case someone’s charging at her wielding a knife. The shipyard is empty. It’s only my company she’s objecting to.

Well, you can’t fault her for taste.

“Normally I have to say something for women to hate me,” I say, strolling into the warehouse, pretending my heart doesn’t thud at the sight of her lithe body. Pretending my cock isn’t a breath away from rock-hard. “I have to say something about their tits or their ass.”

Her eyes narrow, but she doesn’t seem particularly shocked by my crude language. No, she wouldn’t be. Not in this place. She would have heard much worse. “I told him no more guards.”

“You told who?”

“Who else?” she says. “Your boss.”

My boss? I work for the US government. My job is to drive around godforsaken deserts and pray I don’t get blown up by a bomb buried underground. If I play my cards right, I might move into special operations. That’s what was implied before I went on leave. Go along with what Caleb Lewis offers. Collect information. Report back.

It’s a chance to be somewhere other than the bottom rung. Maybe the only chance I’ll ever get. Which means I have no business being interested in this girl. She probably isn’t even eighteen. “My boss,” I repeat, my voice flat.

“Isn’t that why you’re here? To guard me?”

“Why don’t we do this—you dance again. I’ll stand here, but if anyone attacks you, I’ll just let them have at it. No bodyguards for you.”

She’s not amused. “The guards aren’t there to protect me. You’re here to keep me in the warehouse or keep me at home. Make sure I don’t wander away. Make sure I don’t talk to anyone.”

“You’re talking to me.”

“You tell Caleb we had a deal. And it doesn’t include some—” Her narrowed gaze sweeps down my body, as if she’s only now noticed that I have a body. “Some overmuscled asshole on steroids.”

I put my hand over my chest. “Direct hit. I’m wounded you think I’d resort to steroids. These muscles were earned the old-fashioned way, thank you very much.”

She snorts, which somehow sounds feminine and delicate. “I’m sure you do much worse things than steroids. And there is no way, absolutely no way, that you’re going to be my new guard, so tell Caleb he can forget it.”

“Would it put your mind at ease to know he didn’t send me?” Though I’m curious how he’s connected to her. We enlisted at the same time. Went through basic at the same time. We’ve never been close, really. When we both had leave, I was surprised he offered for me to hang out with him in New Orleans. I accepted because I have nowhere else to go. At the time I had no idea that I’d be approached by some special department to gather intel for them. Doesn’t take a genius to figure out Caleb’s into some bad shit.

“Right,” she says, unconvinced. “So you’re standing in the one warehouse that doesn’t contain anything illegal because…?”

“Total coincidence. I was looking for the illegal stuff.” Which means I have no business staying to chat with this woman, no matter how compelling she looks with that notch between her eyebrows. She looks goddamn fierce. “Honestly.”

A roll of her eyes. “Tell my brother he doesn’t need to waste time and energy watching me. I’m staying out of trouble.”

Her brother. Jesus. If she’s Caleb Lewis’s sister, then she’s not staying in trouble. It won’t be a clean shot that brings him down. It’ll be a grenade launcher that hits him—metaphorically speaking. Or literally speaking. Everyone in his vicinity will end up in jail or dead. That’s inevitable.

And she’s right here.

Excerpt:

“Well, isn’t this the most delicious surprise.”

My head confirmed what my eyes were showing me, but my stubborn heart still refused to believe. Jamie was back from Ireland? Why hadn’t Ever told me? Neither of those answers seemed to matter as much as why Jamie was back.

The short sleeves of the button up he wore were rolled and bunched at the shoulders, displaying the muscles he’d grown since I’d last seen him four years ago. The white cotton only pronounced his tanned skin. He’d left the buttons undone, allowing anyone who laid eyes on him to see his hard chest and defined abs…and the many tattoos that covered them. Most of them were angry and aggressive, almost scary as if he were showing off his demons for anyone to see. Recalling my sweet Jamie from long ago, and what happened the last time I’d seen him, I knew I was responsible for every one of them.

Gone was the gentle boy next door with a full mop of hair, a lanky body, and an easy smile. This boy standing before me was darker, edgier…more tragic to my lonely, fragile heart. Was that yearning burning in the pit of my stomach or fear of the unknown? Because I didn’t know this Jamie, and judging by the wicked gleam in his eyes as he flashed that mocking grin, I didn’t want to know.

“What the hell are you doing back here?”

“Is that any way to greet your first love? I got to say”—his gaze slowly traced every dip and curve of my body—“I love how well you’ve grown up, Bette.”

“First love?” I scoffed, even though it felt like he’d stolen my breath. “You were hardly that.”

“Then what was I?” he challenged, backing me against the opposite wall. “I’m breathless to hear more of your lies.”

“You were nothing.”

He flashed me that sad, beautiful smile I hadn’t realized I’d missed so much. I stood perfectly still as his wolfish gaze ate me up. As close as he stood now, he wouldn’t miss a single fucking flaw. There were many, but no one dared looked close enough to see. I might as well have been Medusa. As he ran his gaze over me, I took the time to study him as well, noting the silver bar piercing his right brow and the small diamond in his right nostril. I could have sworn I’d even glimpse a flash of metal piercing his nipples. Jamie had taken all that sinful deliciousness he naturally possessed and multiplied it by ten thousand. As if the world didn’t already have enough injustices.

“You’re so beautiful. Did it hurt?” He kept his gaze on me as he turned his head and blew out smoke.

“Did what hurt?” I could feel the heat from Jamie’s cigarette when he defiantly brushed his thumb across my bottom lip. To Jamie’s knowledge, I belonged to his cousin now, but he clearly didn’t give a damn.

“When you fell from heaven, Satan.”

I slapped his hand away while telling myself to get a grip. Jamie might have surprised me, but he was nothing I couldn’t handle. “Get lost, Jameson.”

Tapping the end of his cigarette, he sprinkled ash onto my designer blouse. A piece of the flame had fallen, burning through the sheer material, scorching my skin. Before now, I’d never thought Jamie capable of hurting me. The truth was now so blatantly blazed into our history that it could never be unwritten.

Without warning, he pressed closer until I could see nothing but the angry blackness of his eyes. “I’m afraid I’m not going anywhere. By the time I’m done with you, Barbette Montgomery, you’ll be crawling back to me… but I doubt I’ll want my cousin’s sloppy thirds.”

“I wouldn’t hold your breath.” I wasted little time pushing him away. Tragically, the moment my hand connected with his warm skin, the electricity threatening to make my broken heart beat again became too obvious to ignore. I tried to run from it, but some inexplicable need to seal our fate had me spinning on my heel to face him again. “Better yet, Jameson, do us both the favor, won’t you?”
